MOSSES OF CHILE |
In Chile we can find ca. 220 moss genera, representing around 65 moss families. Click on the letters above for accessing the list of Chilean moss genera starting with that letter. Clicking on any genera from that list you can access the genus description, illustrations (when available), its distribution in Chile and in the world, and the list of species recorded from Chile. Clicking any of this species, you can access the individual species card, with photographs and comments (under construction). (The names currently considered synonyms of other names are indicated with an asterisc *) If you want to check the systematic position of any Chilean moss genera following Brotherus classification, modified by Si He (1998), click here. If you want to check the systematic position of any Chilean moss genera following the most recent classification published (Goffinet, Buck & Shaw 2008), click here.

You can see that both classifications differ in many aspects. Day by day new morphological, molecular, chemical, physiological and anatomical data is discovered, building a larger background for establishing more confidently the real phylogenetic affinities of species. The science that study this, is called "systematics". |
